As a chiropractor specializing in child development, I’ve discovered fascinating connections between bedwetting and our body’s primitive reflexes.
Let me explain the spinal galant reflex. This reflex develops while baby is in the womb, where any stimulation to the back triggers urination. During birth, as baby moves through the birth canal, the mother’s pubic bone naturally stimulates the back muscles, helping baby urinate and clear out pregnancy byproducts. This is one reason why vaginal birth is so important for development.
But what happens when this reflex doesn’t integrate properly? Certain factors can interrupt this natural process: C-sections, breech positioning, or complications with meconium during delivery. When the spinal galant reflex doesn’t integrate on schedule, children may experience bedwetting because any movement or stimulation while lying in bed can trigger the urge to urinate.
Early in my practice, I learned about adjustment techniques that sometimes worked like a “light switch” for bedwetting. However, I noticed inconsistent results—some dry nights, some wet nights. This inspired me to dive deeper into childhood development and understand all the pieces of this complex puzzle.
Here’s a practical tip: bladder control follows a developmental sequence, and the pedaling motion is crucial. When children use low-riding scooters or tricycles with their feet on the ground, that pedaling movement activates the transverse abdominis muscle—the lowest abdominal muscle that sits right in front of the bladder. This muscle helps signal the brain when the bladder is full.
*Balance bikes don’t provide this benefit because they use a tap-tap-glide motion instead of continuous pedaling.
