In this episode, I talk with Mark Tommerdahl about Brain Gauge, a tool designed to measure and train brain connectivity through precise fingertip vibrations. We discuss how it assesses foundational brain functions, how its exercises work like a gym for the brain, and the changes Mark has observed in people dealing with attention difficulties, stroke recovery, autism, dementia, concussion, and other neurological challenges.
About My Guest:
Dr. Mark Tommerdahl is a biomedical engineer, neuroscientist, and longtime professor at the University of North Carolina whose research focuses on cortical dynamics, sensory processing, plasticity, and pain. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and helped develop Brain Gauge, a quantitative sensory testing tool designed to assess aspects of brain function. Through his work with Cortical Metrics, he continues to translate decades of neuroscience research into practical tools for measuring and understanding brain health.
Key Takeaways:
Discover how controlled fingertip vibrations can be used to measure different aspects of brain connectivity, processing speed, plasticity, and other foundational functions without relying heavily on language-based testing.
Understand how targeted Brain Gauge exercises are designed like a physical workout for the brain, gradually challenging specific functions such as attention, speed, and connectivity as performance improves.
Gain a new perspective on why tracking brain function over time may be valuable during concussion recovery, stroke rehabilitation, cognitive decline, ADHD, autism, and other neurological challenges, while helping families and practitioners see whether interventions are producing measurable changes.

More about Connect My Brain:
You’ve tried everything. So why are you, or your child, still struggling?
Many families and adults who walk through the doors of my clinic, Connect My Brain, have been down that road. Traditional approaches haven’t given them the answers or results they hoped for, leaving them frustrated, overwhelmed, and still asking: Why is this happening, and what can we do about it?
I’m Dr. Laura Hanson, and helping people find those answers is what I do every day. I started the Connect My Brain podcast to share that work beyond my clinic walls. My goal is to help more people look deeper at how the brain is functioning so they can understand the “why” behind their struggles and what to do next.
From ADHD, OCD, learning difficulties, and mood challenges to negative patterns that just won’t seem to change, we’ll explore the brain in a whole new way.
New episodes drop on Thursdays, so listen on your favorite podcast app or watch on YouTube as I break down neurofeedback, biofeedback, brainwave frequencies, brain function, and more. You’ll come away with a better understanding of your brain, your child, and the possibilities you may not have explored yet. Ready to take the next step?
