Helping Your Child Navigate the Back to School Transition: A Brain-Based Approach

As we wrap up August 2025 and kids head back to school, I’m seeing more families struggling with the transition than ever before. Summer breaks are now shorter, and our children are constantly rushed from one activity to the next. This non-stop pace is impacting not just our kids, but us parents too.

What many parents don’t realize is that every experience we practice shapes how our children’s brains develop. When I see kids having difficulty with the back to school transition (whether they’re clingy, anxious, or acting out) I look deeper than just labeling it as ADD or ADHD.

The key lies in understanding primitive reflexes, particularly the Moro Reflex. This reflex system helps determine whether your child feels safe or threatened in their environment. When children don’t feel secure, their peripheral vision stays on “scanner mode,” making it nearly impossible to focus and learn effectively.

Today’s school environment presents unique challenges. Beyond traditional fire drills, children now practice intruder and gunman drills. Even though safety is important, we must also recognize the anxiety these practices can create in developing minds.

Signs your child may be struggling include difficulty transitioning into the classroom, being easily distracted, or showing extreme behaviors (either overly cautious or reckless). Keep in mind, these aren’t character flaws, they’re neurological responses to feeling unsafe.

If your child is having a tough back to school transition, consider that their brain might be trying to tell you something important about their developmental needs.
