What exactly is executive function, and where is it in the brain?
This question inspired today’s podcast.
Executive function isn’t something we’re born with—it develops gradually as our brain matures. Think of it like building a house: you need a solid foundation before adding the walls and roof. In our brain, the foundation begins with our occipital lobe (visual processing) and cerebellum (coordination and balance), which then become the model for our midbrain development, and eventually our frontal lobe.
When executive function works properly, your child follows multi-step directions, completes homework assignments, organizes their space, and makes reasonable decisions. But when there’s an issue, you might notice your child struggling to follow through, appearing disorganized, or having difficulty planning.
These patterns don’t appear overnight—they develop through thousands of repetitions and become part of your child’s “blueprint.” That’s why understanding your child’s entire developmental history is crucial for addressing executive function challenges.
The good news? No one is stuck with these patterns. Through intensive, frequent brain retraining, proper nutrition, and appropriate expectations, we can help your child develop stronger executive function skills at any age.
If you’re interested in diving deeper into this topic, I invite you to check out our recent webinar on executive function or join our parent membership community for access to resources, discounted lab testing, supplements, and a supportive group of parents facing similar challenges.
Remember, your child’s brain is constantly developing. With the right support and understanding, we can help them build the executive function skills they need to thrive.
