Today I wanted to focus on something absolutely fundamental to our health and development: chemistry. By chemistry, I mean the fuel that runs the human body.
At Connect My Brain, I focus on the mechanical, chemical, and brain aspects of development. While I’ve talked extensively about mechanics (those developmental milestones children need to accomplish) and the brain (how movement wires up neural pathways), today I’m diving into that crucial third piece—the chemistry that makes it all possible.
Without the correct fuel, it’s incredibly difficult to make lasting neurological changes. This is one of the biggest challenges I face in my practice: helping families understand why the chemical aspect is so important for bringing everything together.
Many factors influence our body’s chemistry from the very beginning. When a baby doesn’t go through the birth canal during a C-section, they miss exposure to beneficial bacteria and the mechanical compression that helps develop the cranial structure. When ear infections are treated with antibiotics (despite research showing 99.9% are viral), it alters gut chemistry during critical developmental windows.
Even what happens before birth matters—the health of both parents at conception, what mom consumes during pregnancy, and environmental exposures all impact a child’s developing systems.
I’m excited to announce our summer intensive program for 2025! For families struggling with developmental challenges, this program offers the intensity and frequency needed to create real neurological change. Over twelve weeks, we address the triangle of development (eyes, ears, and vestibular system) and tackle the chemical imbalances that may be holding your child back.
Remember, the earlier we address these issues, the easier they are to resolve. But it’s never too late to make positive changes—we just need commitment and the right approach.
Topics covered in this episode:
- The critical role of body chemistry as the “fuel” that runs human development, and why it’s often the missing piece when addressing developmental challenges
- How early experiences like C-section births, ear infections, and antibiotic use can alter a child’s developing chemistry and impact neurological development
- The importance of the vestibular system (balance center) and how it connects to the eyes and ears to form the “triangle of development” in children
- Why intensity and frequency are essential for creating true neurological change, and how our summer intensive program provides the necessary repetition to reset the brain stem
- The concept of developmental windows and why addressing chemical and neurological issues early is easier, though it’s never too late to make positive changes with the right approach

More about Connect My Brain:
Why is this happening to my kid and what can I do about it? If you are the parent of a developmentally delayed child then you’ve probably asked this question more than once. That’s where I come in! I’m Dr. Laura Hanson and I specialize in identifying the “why” and telling you the “what.” Join me every Thursday for a deeper look at how our brains are wired and how to get the most out of your mind. Are you looking to break negative patterns, overcome mood disorders, or optimize your potential? Maybe your child struggles with ADHD, OCD or other learning difficulties. Tune in to Connect My Brain, where I explain concepts like biofeedback and neurofeedback, brainwave frequencies, and much more. Let me help you change your life by changing your mind!
