The Fundamental Skills Every Child Needs For Healthy Brain Development

The Fundamental Skills Every Child Needs For Healthy Brain Development

Today I want to talk about some fundamental skills that are absolutely crucial for your child’s healthy brain development, and why so many kids are missing these building blocks today.

The Power of Hands-On Learning

Did you know that learning to tell time on an analog clock does so much more than just teach time? When children manipulate those paper plate clocks we used to make – moving the hands with their fingers – they’re actually building critical neural pathways in their sensory motor cortex. This is the same brain region that impacts everything from fine motor skills to planning abilities.

A brain map will show just how much space our hands and face occupy in our brain’s sensory motor cortex. This is why tactile learning is so powerful for healthy brain development.

Three Critical Skills We’re Losing

I’m seeing significant gaps in three key areas:

Time Perception: Digital clocks have replaced the spatial understanding that comes from reading analog faces. Try this: ask your child to tell you when five minutes is up without looking at a clock. You might be surprised by their response!

Fine Motor Development: Velcro shoes and digital devices are bypassing the crucial fine motor development that comes from shoe-tying and pencil grip. These skills directly impact handwriting and overall motor control.

Reading and Spelling Foundations: Your brain doesn’t have a “reading center” – it’s called the letterbox, and it requires integrating visual and auditory processing that starts in infancy with those early cooing sounds.

Why This Matters

When children miss these developmental milestones, their brains adapt – but adaptation often comes at a cost. I see this daily in my practice through issues with attention, handwriting difficulties, and time management struggles that follow kids throughout their academic careers.

The good news? With proper assessment and targeted intervention, we can build these foundational circuits at any age. It takes practice and patience, but the brain’s neuroplasticity makes remarkable changes possible.

Homunculus

In this episode, we cover:

The homunculus and sensory motor cortex – Why the size of hands and face on this brain map explains why tactile learning is so crucial for healthy brain development

Time perception skills – How moving from analog to digital clocks has impacted children’s ability to understand time concepts and why this affects executive function and planning abilities

Fine motor development – The connection between shoe-tying, pencil grip, and the palmar reflex, and how Velcro shoes and digital devices are bypassing critical developmental milestones

Reading and spelling foundations – Understanding the “letterbox” in the brain and how visual and auditory processing must integrate, starting from those early cooing and vowel sounds in infancy

The cost of developmental gaps – How missing these fundamental building blocks leads to attention issues, handwriting difficulties, and academic struggles that can follow children throughout their school careers

More about Connect My Brain:

Why is this happening to my kid and what can I do about it? If you are the parent of a developmentally delayed child then you’ve probably asked this question more than once. That’s where I come in! I’m Dr. Laura Hanson and I specialize in identifying the “why” and telling you the “what.” Join me every Thursday for a deeper look at how our brains are wired and how to get the most out of your mind. Are you looking to break negative patterns, overcome mood disorders, or optimize your potential? Maybe your child struggles with ADHD, OCD or other learning difficulties.
