I’ve spent years working with children who struggle with focus, and I can tell you that what we often dismiss as “just being a kid” might actually be something more. When parents come to me worried about their child’s attention span, I always start by looking at the bigger picture, because ADHD rarely shows up alone.
ADHD frequently comes with companions like anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, and sleep disorders. In fact, studies show that 60-80% of children with ADHD have at least one other condition. This overlap can make diagnosis tricky and treatment even more complex.
One aspect that often gets overlooked is the role of primitive reflexes. These are automatic movements that babies are born with, and when they don’t integrate properly as the nervous system develops, they can present similarly to ADHD symptoms. This is where occupational therapy becomes incredibly valuable – OTs can assess for retained primitive reflexes along with vision, hearing, and other developmental factors.
The good news is that we have effective treatment options. Medication can be life-changing when used appropriately. I always tell parents that medication doesn’t change who your child is – it helps them access their full potential. Beyond medication, occupational therapy, behavioral interventions, educational support, and lifestyle modifications all play important roles.
What I want parents to understand is that getting an accurate diagnosis matters. If your child is struggling with attention, don’t just accept it as normal. Work with professionals who take the time to evaluate the whole picture and consider all the factors that might be contributing to your child’s challenges.
Early intervention makes a tremendous difference, and children with ADHD can absolutely thrive with the right support system in place.
In this episode, we cover:
- Why 60-80% of children with ADHD have at least one co-occurring condition like anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, or sleep disorders
- How primitive reflexes can present similarly to ADHD symptoms and why occupational therapy assessment is crucial
- The different types of ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined) and how they show up differently in children
- Why medication doesn’t change who your child is and how it helps with executive functioning and focus
- The importance of getting a comprehensive evaluation that looks at the whole picture, not just the most obvious symptoms
