What Your Child’s Food Preferences Reveal About Their Health

What Your Child's Food Preferences Reveal About Their Health

In this episode of Connect My Brain, I dive into one of my greatest passions – connecting the dots when it comes to your child’s health and development. As a practitioner with over 30 years of experience specializing in pediatrics, I’ve observed how seemingly separate health issues often share common roots.

When we look at mood swings, attention issues, digestive problems, or even chronic infections, conventional medicine often focuses on treating symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. But I believe in looking at the bigger picture – understanding how your gut health, immune system, brain, and overall body function as an interconnected network.

One area I highlight is the impact of strep infections and antibiotics on children’s health. While antibiotics can be necessary interventions, they also disrupt the microbiome – that crucial community of bacteria in your gut that affects everything from immune function to neurotransmitter production. This disruption can lead to biofilms harboring harmful bacteria that periodically “spawn,” causing cyclical symptoms that many parents describe as behaviors that “come back with a vengeance” every few weeks.

I also discuss how childhood infections and their treatments can create long-lasting effects, even without obvious symptoms. Elevated strep antibodies, for example, can affect brain function, potentially contributing to mood disorders, obsessive behaviors, and attention issues.

What’s most important to understand is that your child’s foundation for health begins before pregnancy and continues developing through those crucial early years. Every child is unique in how their body expresses imbalances – some showing symptoms immediately while others don’t display issues until later.

At Connect My Brain, we focus on all three pillars of health: mechanical, chemical, and neurological. We believe in teaching families to understand their bodies so they can maintain health long-term, even when life throws surprises their way.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • How common health issues like mood swings, digestive problems, and attention difficulties often share the same root causes despite manifesting differently in each child
  • The critical relationship between gut health and brain function, including how antibiotics and infections can disrupt the microbiome and create recurring cycles of symptoms
  • Why children’s cravings for specific foods (especially carbohydrates) can reveal important information about their gut health and neurological state
  • The long-term impacts of childhood infections like strep, even without obvious symptoms, and how elevated antibodies can affect brain function and behavior
  • The importance of looking at health holistically through all three pillars: mechanical, chemical, and neurological development, rather than just treating isolated symptoms
